Pete’s Pics “Blues in Action”

DAVID WHITEIS
I first noticed David Whiteis upon seeing his byline so often in the pages of Living Blues Magazine where we are both contributors. He has profiled many, many blues artists over the years and is a frequent reviewer of music cds. I contacted David on the chance that we might collaborate on a particular book idea and, lo and behold, he was working on a similar idea at the time. So we joined forces and I provided over 40 photographs for Blues Legacy:Tradition and Innovation in Chicago.

David is that veritable “walking encyclopedia” of blues history that has kept some legacies alive. He has interviewed and made acquaintances with so many Chicago Blues and Soul Blues artists, there’s no telling who he’ll introduce me to next. He’s promised to release an interactive website “in the near future” so often that I… I can’t wait for it. I helped design it from scratch but wasn’t tech savvy enough to include the bells and whistles that will make it viable for ongoing conversations with blues lovers. I hope it happens soon, the blues community will benefit from it.

Whiteis is a writer and educator living in Chicago. He is a past winner of the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Achievement in Journalism. He is the author of Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories; Southern Soul-Blues; and Blues Legacy:Tradition and Innovation in Chicago, and the co-author of  Always the Queen: The Denise LaSalle Story.  His articles have appeared in numerous blues and jazz magazines, both in the U.S. and overseas.
