Bassist and bandleader Joe Pratt announces a tribute gig on July 11 and offers these words on his friend and bandmate of many years, SIR WALTER SCOTT:

July 11th will be JOE PRATT & SourceOneBand’s first return to the Odyssey (9942 South Torrence Avenue Chicago, IL 60617) to pay tribute to WALTER SCOTT since the Pandemic shut us down March 15, 2020. Sadly, Walter passed away very unexpectedly April 15, 2020. WE TIMED THIS TRIBUTE WITH WALTER’S BIRTH DATE JULY 10TH.

We will be performing “OUTSIDE” in the adjacent lot 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Bring your own chairs, but no drinks or coolers PLEASE! There will be servers outside, or you can order from the bar. Owner Howard Smith and I made the decision to return which is in alignment with the City Of Chicago’s announcement of fully reopening. We still encourage all to take the reported Pandemic that has plagued our nation and abroad very seriously. My entire band is fully vaccinated, as is The Odyssey staff, as well as almost all our regular customers. Please know that the Odyssey will continue to monitor and follow Federal CDC, State and City guidelines. So come on out and invite other CardCarryingBluesBrothersAndSisters back to The Odyssey for the best in Live 🥁 Entertainment!

There’s really not much I can add to the Legacy of Walter except to say I’m honored to have been a friend and fellow musician for 40 years. Walter and The Scott Family need no introduction for their precision-based musical talent. The Scotts have inspired many musicians including myself. As stated in my Living Blues Article*, SourceOneBand is comprised of veteran musicians who have performed with music Legends. I was proud to have Walter as a member of my band. He was recognizable at almost every gig we performed, and at every gig I received a free music lesson. (Any musician who performed with Walter would, if they paid attention, LOL).

Bottom line is, Sunday July 11, 2021 we’re going to have a musical good time in honor of the great “SIR WALTER SCOTT.”

Mr. Hurley is a contributing photographer and writer for Living Blues Magazine and the staff photographer for Chicago Blues Network. His recent book Blues Legacy: Tradition and Innovation in Chicago, in collaboration with Blues historian and author David Whiteis, showcases his work in the field. His passion for blues music began with a 6th grade dance party discovery of Bo Diddley which led to Little Walter, muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and so on. It continues to this day.
