“As a little kid, blues meant hope, excitement, pure emotion…made me wanna move, or sing, or pick up Reverend’s guitar and figure out how to make those wonderful sounds.” ― B.B. King

We are all bombarded with seemingly fantastical and disturbing news stories every day, almost hourly. It was a much needed break for me to visit my son in Los Angeles and my daughter in Silver City, New Mexico.

My son and I are driving the 650 miles back to LA because Silver City is so remote that air travel is almost impossible. It’s in the high desert, 6500 feet up , the air is pure and sun is almost a constant every day. While my daughter is getting her masters and being an assistant basketball coach, it strikes me that I was here in 2002 performing in the Silver City Blues Festival along with some heavy headliners. The fest stands out in my mind because the setting was gorgeous and the people attending were so enthusiastic, we all were one tribe of humanity celebrating this life through the transcendence of the Blues- pure joy and adrenaline.

I have been so fortunate to travel all over the world playing my interpretation and my homage to the Blues. Asia, South America, Europe, and North America. And wherever we went, particularly playing in festivals, I witnessed the power and deliverance of this music, even in remote corners of the world, in places like Silver City, once a booming Wild West mining town, home to the likes of Billy the Kid.

While we all navigate these intense times, and improvise ways to still enjoy live music, I encourage all of you to pick up your instrument, or sing out and express yourself. Music is a river of feeling, and most assuredly the Blues a vehicle. Be well!

Until next week,
Joanna Connor
